Coach Marc Rambaldi is offering free Impact Concussion baseline testing for all NCHC players at his physical therapy practice in Hackensack NJ (1 block from Hackensack Univ Med Center). Appointments would be made through office.
Impact is the only FDA approved tool to document healthy brain functions of athletes via a 20 minute neurocognitive computer/ipad test. If a concussion is suspected, post injury tests (performed at home post injury) can confirm as well as guide rehabilitation and return to play decisions. Post injury testing should be completed within 48-72 hours. He is partnered with 2 Orthopedic surgeons (Dr Cahill and Dr Porter Jr) and have close relations with pediatric neuro psychologists at The NJ Concussion Center in Hackensack to assist in severe injuries-including orthopedic injuries.
Personally, we complete post concussion evaluation and rehabilitation through 5 stages of recovery and communicate with schools, coaches, pediatricians and parents to provide recommendations on the specific symptom trajectories that the athlete is presenting (Vestibular, mood, vision, Cognitive, migraine, neck pain)
Some facts about concussion care:
- 80% have a full recovery within 21 days. > 3 weeks of symptoms is a protracted recovery (A score of less than 60.5 on the post injury verbal memory score=85% chance of protracted recovery)
-
First week post injury, symptoms are usually vague before presenting in one (or multiple) clinical trajectories: Vestibular, Anxiety/mood, Oculomotor, cognitive/fatigue, post traumatic migraine and cervical spine pain.
-
Most cases require an initial 24-48 hours of complete rest.
-
Studies show 2 or more concussions often correlate to decreased GPA, poor sleep habits, poor school attendance and withdrawal from social activities.
-
Sub symptom aerobic exercise as a treatment option is becoming more prevalent in research
-
Post Concussion Treadmill Test is often utilized as a predictor of readiness for return to play decision making.
**ACL knee injury screening can also be performed with slow motion video analysis if interested (flyer attached)
Please feel free to email Marc with any questions. Being able to combine his profession with coaching is extremely rewarding and it would be his pleasure to speak with any parents of the club.
